Students are exposed to basic electronics, the impact of robotics on our society, the actual construction of robotics, and participation in the TSA/VES “Technosphere” competition every year. This program activates interest in math, science, technology, and over-all problem-solving skills.

Trip to the Holocausat Museum in Washington, D.C.

After reading and discussing Anne Frank and the Nuremberg Laws, as well as other books on the topic, students have a culminating experience in a visit to the Holocaust Museum to witness in a very graphic setting the horrors of the crimes visited on Jewish people. Student response to the trip is documented through art work.

One School, One Book Program

Every student, grades pre-K-5, receives a copy of the novel Trumpet of the Swan by E.B White to take home. Every night parents are encouraged to listen to their children read the assigned number of pages or read to them. Follow-up at school throughout the month generates enthusiasm for reading, and a family night featuring art, discussion, and prizes is the culmination of this community-wide reading program.

Phyllis Parker, a Social Studies teacher at Rockbridge County High School, will speak about her experiences teaching democracy in Iraq on Sept 29^th at 7:30 in the RCHS auditorium. This event is sponsored by the International Relations Club at Rockbridge County High School.

Hydroponics Project

Seventh grade students willl research, design, and construct four hydroponics units, two for MRMS (first semester) and two for RMS (second semester). These units will include the hydroponics containers, a plant support system, and a lighting system. Additionally, students will explore hydroponics research conducted by NASA, including the effects of microgravity (gravitropism) to determine the benefits and/or limitations of growing plants hydroponically.

This study will continue throughout the year in all 7^th grade science classes where the units will be placed. Students will cover SOL’s related to scientific investigation as they design experiments to study the effects of waste water from a trout aquarium upon the growth of plants. This experiment will be a bridge to another class project in which students raise native brook trout from the egg to Parr stage. If all goes well, the goal is for student to be able to harvest and eat the plants grown hydroponically.

iPads for a Fourth Grade Class

Globes for Every Third Grader

For the fifth year in a row, in conjunction with the Sunrise Rotary Club and Wal-Mart, and later also with Community Bank and Corner Stone Bank, every third grader in the city and county was given, to keep at home, a 12-inch, mountain relief globe that contains over 4,000 current names and boundaries of countries, cities, oceans, rivers.
