Trip to the Holocausat Museum in Washington, D.C.

 After reading and discussing Anne Frank and the Nuremberg Laws, as well as other books on the topic, students have a culminating experience in a visit to the Holocaust Museum to witness in a very graphic setting the horrors of the crimes visited on Jewish people.  Student response to the trip is documented through art work.





Globes for Every Third Grader

For the fifth year in a row, in conjunction with the Sunrise Rotary Club and Wal-Mart, and later also with Community Bank and Corner Stone Bank, every third grader in the city and county was given, to keep at home, a 12-inch, mountain relief globe that contains over 4,000 current names and boundaries of countries, cities, oceans, rivers.





Bringing History Alive into the School

Central Elementary School – 2010-2011 – All 4th and 5th graders get to experience their teachers dressed in regalia from American history, as people and events are taught throughout the year.  Hands-on manipulatives allow students to get a feel for the time period.





Model UN

Rockbridge County High School – 2010-2011 – In collaboration with the Rockbridge Community Foundation and the school system, RCPSF helped facilitate another successful Model UN experience at Washington and Lee and Virginia Military Institute.  Six schools participated in this meaningful opportunity to explore ways to peacefully settle world problems.

Effinger Elementary School – 2008-2009  Period costumes were funded for the teacher to wear during the teaching of Virginia and U.S. history so that fourth and fifth graders can interact with questions for and conversations with historical figures to make these important people come alive.  Other objects purchased will provide a hands-on experience for the students – SOLs made personal!





Greenbrier Bunker Trip

Rockbridge County High School – 2008-2009 – All juniors will have the opportunity to experience the Cold War mentality when the tickets to the Greenbrier Bunker are purchased.  Preparation before the trip, as well as writing assignments after the event, will serve to enlighten students about the moral and ethical issues raised by the creation and exposure of this facility.





Model United Nations

Rockbridge County High School – 2007-2008 – Some funding was provided for the second time to continue the highly-successful hosting of the second annual, two-day Model UN by Rockbridge County High School at Washington and Lee University and Virginia Military Institute in which nine high schools with a total of 151 delegates participated in March, 2008.

Rockbridge County High School – 2006-2007 – Funding was provided to the  newly-formed International Relations Club’s to host the first-ever Model UN to held at Washington and Lee University in February, 2007.
