Robotics Program

23 01 2012

Students are exposed to basic electronics, the impact of robotics on our society, the actual construction of robotics, and participation in the TSA/VES “Technosphere” competition every year.  This program activates interest in math, science, technology, and over-all problem-solving skills.

IXL Site License

6 10 2010

Natural Bridge Elementary School – 2010-2011 – This interactive website license allows students to learn math at their level at home and at school individually, in a small group, or as a class.  Students are able to receive both remedial and advanced instruction through this innovative site license.

SMART Response “Clicker” Technology

4 08 2010

Maury River Middle School – 2010-2011 – Funding allows this question/answer educational tool to spark enthusiasm in responding to classroom questions.  The technology gives students and teachers instant feedback for pre-testing and review of science and math concepts.

Solar-Powered Fountain

4 08 2010

Central Elementary School – 2010-2011 – As part of Central’s Green School Challenge, fifth graders are designing, building, and maintaining an indoor water garden with solar-powered pumps and living plants and animals.  These students calculate solar panel angles with the help of cadets from V.M.I. whose long-term collaboration with Central has been established with electrical/mechanical/engineering professors.

Vertical Wind Turbine

4 08 2010

Rockbridge County High School – 2010-2011 – Purchase of a generator, steel framing, welding materials, and other items make it possible for junior and senior drafting students to build and install the most efficient wind turbine after studying multiple wind turbine designs, developing small scale models, analyzing power production under different wind conditions and gear ratios, and creating a presentation about the design and building process.

Algebra through Movement

4 08 2007

Rockbridge County High School – 2007-2008 – Ten calculator-based motion sensors allow Algebra I, Parts I and II; Algebra I CP; Algebra II; Algebra III/Trig; and physics students to see how their own movement or that of a ball can be graphed over time.  Students can explore rate of change (slope) and intercepts and create equations representing that motion. Physics students can investigate the relationship between time and distance.  Abstract math concepts come alive with this technology for all levels of math expertise.

Calculus Unlimited Software

4 08 2006

Rockbridge County High School – 2006-2007 – A  network version of a comprehensive software program was purchased to complement Algebra I CP instruction.  It is designed to amplify and facilitate intellectual inquiry – to make math come alive, to help students think as mathematicians.

Visual Presenter

4 08 2005

Rockbridge Middle School – 2005-2006 – Three-dimensional, state-of-the-art, across the curriculum marvelous machine was purchased to allow math and English teachers to project student work for illustration and correction and science teachers to project items beneath a microscope for an entire class to see.

Dreamweaver 8 Software

4 08 2005

Rockbridge County High School – 2005-2006 – This cutting edge, industry-standard software was purchased for the Web Design class and for the high school staff to facilitate design and creativity.
