 In partnership with Rockbridge County Schools Central Office, Central School and its PTA, Dominion Power, and Washington and Lee University, funds have been provided to continue the sequential, hands-on environmental-based learning at Boxerwood for grades three-five.





iPads for a Fourth Grade Class

This pilot project will allow educators to evaluate the use of this technology at the elementary level to enhance instruction in reading, math, and science.





Globes for Every Third Grader

For the fifth year in a row, in conjunction with the Sunrise Rotary Club and Wal-Mart, and later also with Community Bank and Corner Stone Bank, every third grader in the city and county was given, to keep at home, a 12-inch, mountain relief globe that contains over 4,000 current names and boundaries of countries, cities, oceans, rivers.

Junior Strings Program

Central Elementary – 2010-2011 – As the strings program burgeons and as the students grow, more instruments are funded for the popular violin program.





Bringing History Alive into the School

Central Elementary School – 2010-2011 – All 4th and 5th graders get to experience their teachers dressed in regalia from American history, as people and events are taught throughout the year.  Hands-on manipulatives allow students to get a feel for the time period.





Solar-Powered Fountain

Central Elementary School – 2010-2011 – As part of Central’s Green School Challenge, fifth graders are designing, building, and maintaining an indoor water garden with solar-powered pumps and living plants and animals.  These students calculate solar panel angles with the help of cadets from V.M.I. whose long-term collaboration with Central has been established with electrical/mechanical/engineering professors.

Youth Strings/Ensemble Initiative

Violins, cellos, music stands, and music were provided for students grades K-8 in an after-school music enrichment program that revitalizes and restores a long-standing community commitment to cultural arts programming.





Junior Achievement

 In collaboration with the Lexington Sunrise Rotary Club,  curricular materials purchased make possible the volunteer-led Junior Achievement program in grades K-3.  Programs include “Ourselves,” “Our Families,” “Our Community,” and “Our City.”
